Steps translate to distance via stride length — typically about 0.41–0.45 times height for walking and 0.60–0.65 for running — and to calories via MET-weighted duration. Walking at a brisk 6 km/h corresponds to roughly 5 MET, so a 70 kg adult covering 10,000 steps over about 8 km burns on the order of 300–400 kcal depending on terrain and grade, separate from basal expenditure. The calculator therefore estimates both distance and active calories from step count plus height and weight, making the chain of assumptions visible rather than hidden inside a device.
Accuracy hinges on how steps were counted: wrist devices overcount at low cadence and undercount with hands constrained, and calorie estimates amplify that error. Treat the distance as directional and the calorie figure as active addition only — adding it on top of a total daily expenditure estimate that already includes walking double-counts the same movement.
Convert steps to distance, calories and time — see km, miles, calories and hours from steps and stride. Formula: Distance = steps*stride. Example: With 10k steps, 75cm stride, 70kg: distance 7.5km, ~400 kcal, about 77 minutes.
